Week 8 - Pleating

This week we had a presentation on the process of fabric pleating from a member of Ciment Pleating. Here are a variety of a number of samples and card templates used for the different kind of pleats that can be created by the company. Some of these pleats can be time consuming but the end results are worth it.

Origami is a traditional Japanese paper folding art.It consists of the use of folding and sculpture techniques on a flat piece of material . Here are some of the structures evolved from it.

Creative Japanese fashion designer Issey Myakie has also used pleats in some of his designs. He designed a collection 132 5. where he expanded two-dimensional graphical shapes into conceptual structured garments. Below is a range from different collections that show how he has created garments using pleats.

Week 7 - Deconstruction: Part 2

Using my tailored jackets from the previous week I paired up with another student and we covered a chair with our jackets, moulding it on to make it skin tight. We left three holes in the structure.

We then removed it from the chair and draped it on to the tailors dummy to form many different and creative designs. Both the inside and the outside of the jacket was used. The three holes were for the head and the arms to go through when applied onto the body. These are a selection of some of the shapes and forms created.

The shapes formed manipulated themselves when on the dummy, forming folds in different places than if it had been draped straight on to the tailors dummy.

The same was done with the lining of the jackets. Once draped on to the tailors dummy it also had a different effect to if it was straight off of the stand.

I rather enjoyed this project and was fascinated by the many different designs and forms created.

Week 6 - Deconstruction: Part 1

A mans vintage tailored jacket was deconstructed. This was done by unpicking the lining from the jacket then unpicking several parts of the lining to create unusual effect.

The lining was then draped to create different shapes on the tailors dummy.

The negative effect was then used to see the different effect.

The outside of the jacket was then used to create more designs.

The same was done to the inside, which created even more designs. Photos were taken using the negative and solorize effects.

Finally, the lining and the jacket was then both used to give a different effect.
